Algorithmic convergence
Software or curators can repeatedly select material related to earlier recorded activity. This can support relevance while narrowing future exposure. Researchers examine the sequence of selections, the available alternatives, the participant's actual response.
A visitor handles a camera, then repeatedly receives photography-related material. Their recorded history becomes increasingly concentrated in that area partly because the institution supplies those opportunities. Staff need to distinguish a developing interest from the effect of their own selection procedure.
Chance and unfamiliarity, opportunity, local interests provide alternative arrangements and interpretations. Researchers can compare random or unrelated placements, different activities, participant-selected departures. The purpose is to understand the consequences of selection rather than assume physical experience automatically prevents narrowing.
