Repair and alteration

A repairer proposes an intervention after examining a particular condition or failure. Staff compare the intended functional result, possible loss of earlier traces, custodial permission, material risks, documentation. They seek the relevant authorization before the intervention, then record the procedure and changed condition.

For the camera, restoring a mechanism could permit further photographs while removing evidence of an improvised modification. The custodian, repairer, historian may value those consequences differently. Staff can arrange a discussion through productive contradiction before deciding the intervention. A demonstration under existing permission and a permanent alteration require separate accounts.

The complete collection permits practical use and repair where agreed. Staff can also retain an unrestored condition, use a substitute for demonstration, commission another representation. They record the decision and its reasons in the passport. Later visitors can examine the changed object and the earlier condition account.
