Semantic distance
Software can calculate a specified difference between representations. The result depends on the representation method, selected inputs, weighting, comparison function. Staff describe those operations before interpreting a numerical distance as relevance.
Two accounts may be close because they discuss the same device while disagreeing about restoration. Distant subject areas may share a useful question about care. Researchers can compare numerical distance with participant judgments, complementary knowledge, deliberate contradiction. A low value alone leaves the reason for a proposed encounter underdetermined.
Matching approaches distinguish those purposes. Embeddings and centroids explain the calculation's inputs. In physical arrangement, spatial distance can express an attributed association, practical placement, another person's intervention. Staff avoid assuming the numerical and material distances describe the same relation.
