Object examination

Contents

Staff examine a possession through several procedures, each with a different question and source. They can combine the results in an Object Passport while preserving the author and method behind each account.

Material examination

An examiner records dimensions, construction, condition, mechanism, visible alterations. They inspect relevant parts, photograph details, request a permitted demonstration. A camera's modified lever may require an operational test. A fragile book may require support and selected page photography. The examiner distinguishes an observed feature from an explanation of its cause.

Ownership and use history

An interviewer records acquisition, previous custodians, use, movement, repairs. A researcher compares dates, manufacture information, inscriptions, available documents. They attribute family recollection and uncertain reconstruction. A participant's account can remain meaningful after a date receives correction, provided staff explain the difference.

Semantic analysis

An author examines descriptions, categories, symbols, references. They compare the participant's initial description with later accounts or visitor interpretations. A camera described as equipment may later appear in an account of family care. The author records the actual expression and context before drawing a broader interpretation.

Associative inquiry

The interviewer follows a person's connections to memories, places, people, other possessions. They ask for an example and permit uncertainty or privacy. The association belongs to that person's account. Another visitor can develop a different association during projective inquiry.

Sociological inquiry

The investigator examines practices around the possession: expertise, exchange, status, admission to a group, private knowledge, care obligations. A collector may distinguish objects through a vocabulary unfamiliar to outsiders. A repairer may demonstrate knowledge before receiving social recognition. The investigator describes the practice and circumstances rather than relying solely on a personal interpretation.
