Temporary public custody
An owner gives staff possession of a thing for an agreed period and purpose. Staff document condition, arrange permitted access, assume specified care responsibilities, provide a procedure for retrieval. Ownership continues under the existing owner unless a separately authorized transfer occurs.
A camera deposit may permit hosted operation for a month, reserve repair decisions, allow a selected account to remain public after return. A book deposit may permit reading and loose-card replies while preserving existing marks. A plant deposit adds recurring care duties and possible biological change. Staff describe the relevant activity in the custodial agreement rather than relying on a general invitation to participate.
The physical separation matters. The owner experiences an absence at home while other people acquire opportunities for use. Portraits, records, later correspondence provide possible returns. Short deposits, renewable loans, gifts, institution-owned possessions offer alternatives. Organizers compare responsibility and continuity for each arrangement through lending and transfer.
